The Predicament of Cultural Studies

A Reply to Richard Rorty and Todd Gitlin

Eva Illouz

The Hebrew University Jerusalem

The article examines the critiques against cultural studies that have been voiced by Richard Rorty, Todd Gitlin and others. The article offers a response to these authors by suggesting that John Rawls and Michael Walzer's theories of justice can help us address some of these critiques.

Key Words: difference • identity • justice • universalism
